Greetings from Shanghai
August 17th, 2007 by absolutemelI’ve been wanting to start a blog but never had the time…or rather the commitment to get it done. Now that i’m stuck in my hotel room (by choice of course), away from the chaotic order of the streets of shanghai, i can finally put my thoughts into words, or in this case, babble away, with a bowl of fries and a basket of hard roll to keep me company.
This trip has been rather disappointing for me. I was really looking forward to good food and shopping. My newly acquainted Hong Kong friends were nice enough to bring me out for lunches and dinners, but it was mostly cantonese style dishes, which was good of course. But it wasn’t what i was craving for…intestines, blood cakes, kidneys soaked in chilli oil. And i came prepared with charcoal tablets to tame my stomach…sigh. As for shopping, i bravely ventured out to yu yuan garden for some bargain hunting yesterday. I think i’ve lost my bargaining skills. Its been 2 years since i last shopped in china…or even our very own petaling street. These con women…oops…business women, they could see the vulnerability in my face and body language. I ended up just buying stuff for my mom. At the rate i was going, it’d be cheaper buying clothes from sungai wang. I was complimented a lot though. "You so pretty…Malaysians very nice". Talk about good PR! Of course i’m nice! I paid you double, if not triple its worth! Sigh…that’s what you get for being compassionate. The people in China are either very rich or very poor. But they’re all opportunists. Well, the women mostly.
So, this is why i’ve decided to stay in my hotel room today, and not go out shopping on my own. I’ve been disheartened.
And why am i in shanghai? I’m exploring the possiblity of a career in the Hong Kong movie industry. I’ve learned that apart from being talented, you need to be well connected, thus entertaining and parties are vital. If i can’t even be bothered with this KL, what more Hong Kong? Plus, my mandarin and cantonese are far from fluent. So i guess i’m not gonna be the next big movie star. But hey…you may never know
